Minimalism is back! If you haven’t heard already, just take a look at the Resort 2011 collections designers presented over the last month. And who better to represent this return to the 90’s androgynous chic than Helmut Lang who has continued to champion the style since its heyday?

Joy Gryson: Oh Boy, Oh Boy

Gryson and her first hit, the Olivia bag. Photo via The NY Times

I’ve never heard of someone so aptly named as handbag designer Joy Gryson. The former designer at Marc Jacobs — now have I got your attention — creates well-crafted, versatile leather handbags known to generate long-term joy in the owner. Not to mention they are just so pretty to look at.

Two years ago, I bought a new Olivia in a gorgeous blush tone with silver hardware on eBay at half-price and just last fall I snagged a black leather Baladyne with silver details for a third of the price — a last chance deal from Indianapolis luxury boutique Frankey’s infamous sale room.

This very Baladyne sparked a subway conversation the other day when a stranger approached me on the F to ask if it was indeed the sold-out Gryson. To which I of course responded that it was, while shocked and excited by the instant camaraderie of the Gryson group. However, my fellow junkie informed me that the handbag house is no more.

I can’t believe it. I don’t believe it because it is not true. After a little Googling of my own, I found that the designer has created a new line called Olivia Harris, inspired by her daughter. Check it out on ShopBop.

Cowls for the Cold

Cowl necks used to mean either a hickey cover-up or the stretched out neck on your mom’s turtleneck sweater. But not anymore. I’m kind of obsessed with these cowl neck scarves, cowls, neck warmers, whatever you want to call them. Practical: they will never fall off when you are strapped down with five bags. Plus, they are truly, unbelievably warm. I found my Michael Kors burnt orange cowl at a Michaels outlet for $13. But here are some homemade numbers from Ozetta on Etsy.

Here’s a big cuddly version from Ozetta

And a smaller one from Ozetta too, the crochet master who learned from her grandmother. Nothing but jealousy over here. It seems like any knitting attempts on my part end up in cramped fingers and a never-ending sea of knots.

The Zoes Are Back

Yes, there are two in fact. The infamous L.A. style guru, Rachel Zoe, is back in action Monday nights at 10pm e/9pm c on Bravo. Complete with fashion, meltdowns, catch-phrases, and of course more fashion, The Rachel Zoe Project is guilty pleasure television at its best.

The other Zoe, the Sam Edelman platform ankle boot styled after Mary-Kate’s favorite Balenciagas will be reproduced this fall. Aren’t they beautiful? Personally, I would wear them sans the quilted leather harness, but that’s just me . . . and Mary-Kate.

Click here to see if they will be in a store near you!

The Model Artist

Models, fashion, and art? How could I NOT be fascinated by artist Danny Roberts?

Roberts’ creations are whimsical, yet beautifully mysterious all at once. His Etsy shop, Igor + Andre, is definitely one of my new favorites. His inspiration comes from fashion such as current models (Gemma Ward and Lily Donaldson are a couple of his favorite muses) and also pop culture. Check out “The Girls in Glasses” below:

The Girls in Glasses

The fashion designer/artist/entrepreneur studied photography at Cal Poly SOL and fashion design at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, so he definitely has the credentials to be fashion’s next greatest illustrator. Good Luck Danny!

Check out Danny’s blog at

You can purchase his prints online at his Etsy shop, Igor + Andre.

P.S. Sorry it’s been awhile since my last post – I moved to a new apartment earlier in the summer and work has taken up my time.

A Subversive Mentality

Love love love Subversive Jewelry by Justin Giunta. Maybe that’s because I interned for him and had a blast or maybe just because his designs are gorgeous and one-of-a-kind. Either way there is no denying his artistic genius and there is definitely no denying that his Fall 2009 collection, Hard Twines, is currently at the top of my wishlist.

Not to mention his collaborations with designers Rachel Roy and Gilles Mendel on their Fall 2009 collections proved to be in a class all their own.

Justin’s eco-conscious designs are all made from vintage or recycled pieces making the old new and chic again.

All Eyes on eBay

I love these vintage poison locket rings. Some are encrusted with crystals and pearls. Others have large gemstones. All open up to reveal a tiny space inside the ring to conceal . . . whatever.
